When I Grow Up |
Author InterviewInterview with D. L. Withers
What is the main message of your book? The main idea is to encourage children to dream big by providing them with role models who did just that! Give a brief synopsis of your book. The book is about a brother and sister who talk about what they want to do when they grow up. Their conversations are sparked by cloud watching. They see different items in the shape of clouds. The children link the items to different African Americans. For example, they see the shape of a golf club in the clouds which sparks their conversation of Tiger Woods or an airplane which sparks their conversation of Bessie Coleman. During their talk, they give short quips of the people and imagine themselves as the person. At the end of the book, the children go off to school to learn the tools needed to realize their dreams while the trailblazers wish them well in their endeavors. How is it unique from other books? The books approach is very different from regular childrens biography books. I chose to create a book that educates children through short biographies of different known and unknown pioneers. I went about this goal via two very common activities that children could relate to . . . cloud watching and imagining. I used jazzy language and vibrant illustrations to grab the reader's attention. The book also has a picture index, as well as a museum directory which serves as an excellent community resource. I wrote this book to teach children the importance of giving recognition to African American trailblazers who have made a difference in the world, encourage them to dream big, and provide them with the courage and strength to realize their dreams. Are you working on any other projects? I just finished my second book. I hope to have it published by September, 2008. I am also creating a teacher's guide and book on cd for When I Grow Up. Who are your favorite authors? I enjoy the writings of Patricia McKissack, Shel Silverstein, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Phillis Wheatley, Helen Steiner Rice, Peggy Parish, Connie Porter, Joyce E. Davis, and my grandmother. What do you like to do for enjoyment? Besides writing, I like to travel, read, attend cultural events, exercise, and spend time with loved ones. |
